The Gap Help

The best advice I can give is . . . stay on the flightpath between waypoints 1 - 5 like you are on rails. You will have to divert for the interceptors from Hyon Ni, but take snap shots at them with AMRAAM's and get back to the flightpath. Pretend you are attached to the rails with a big rubber band, and don't stretch it too far! Don't overfly the target - there are too many Ground/Air threats.

On launch, climb to cross the coast at 8,000' so you don't lose energy climbing again on your approach. After waypoint 1, fire a HARM at the SAM's on your flightpath as soon as you can (make sure you're targetting the right ones - they'll be the closest). They'll probably get a missile away, but if your shot is good, and it hits the SAM before their missile reaches you, their shot will lose guidance and miss (see the Replay).

You will have to be very aware of your position at all times in enemy territory. Memorise the waypoints, and cycle them if you find it difficult, so you know where you are. There isn't much room to manoeuvre, particularly at the target. You must pull a half Cuban 8 at the target after release - it is ringed by AAA in a semi-circle. That is, release your bomb, and pull up vertically, through the top of the loop until you're about 30 degrees nose down inverted, then roll upright and pull up level on a reciprocal course. It's a good idea to either memorise your heading on the approach and calculate your reciprocal, or select waypoint 4. Pull another half Cuban 8 to set up the second pass at the target.

Despite all your best efforts, you will probably find a missile coming for you at some stage. Use the safe corridor and low level to evade it, or there will be more. If an interceptor is still on you after the AMRAAM's, give him a couple of quick Sidewinders to discourage him. Whatever, don't go chasing them any further than you need to, to get the missiles away - you could easily end up with a couple of SAM's on to you, and that's not healthy.

As soon as you get a successful signal (Shift+O) get the hell out and head home via the waypoints to Chuncheon at waypoint 0.

The Replay was my first attempt at Gap23. OK, so I knew the mission, but it's not all that easy (is it?) If you want to watch a replay of Gap21 or Gap27, you'll have to fly them yourself . . .
